Basic rules of usability
Watch what people actually do. Do not believe what people say they do. Definitely don’t believe what people predict they may do in the future. People bend the truth to be closer to what they think you want to hear or what’s socially acceptable. People are really telling you what they remember doing. Human memory is very fallible (via)

Specifically… the act of measuring itself creates an impetus for change and competition—a pressure to move a figure towards whichever extreme is (sometimes arbitrarily given the absence of context) defined as ‘better’. It’s a comment on the nature of observation, feedback loops and the selection of the criteria by which you measure success. (via)
